SHAIKE DAN

SHAIKE DAN

Shaike Dan belongs to a legendary galaxy of Israeli paratroopers who landed in European countries under Nazi occupation during WWII in order to save the Jews from death. Many people are familiar with the name of Hanna Senesh, a Jewish female paratrooper who was murdered by Hungarian fascists. Many stories have been written about other members of this group. However, Shaike Dan was just casually mentioned in the books dedicated to paratroopers. This arises from the fact that even after the war Shaike Dan kept risking his life by landing on the front line and helping the Jews of Diaspora.

Shaike Dan played a leading role in arrangement of the exodus of over 600 thousand Jews from East-European countries such as Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Former Soviet Union and their further resettlement to Israel. This mass resettlement was often organized under a veil of secrecy and even today many details have not received publicity. Shaike Dan had to fulfill many other secret tasks, such as delivery of weapons to Israel during the War for Independence in 1947-1949. That’s why many people are interested to find out as much as possible about this little known person who participated in such important historical events.

In the foreword to a Hebrew edition of the book entitled “Blind Jump” Shimon Peres wrote: “Those who know Shaike will definitely feel how exactly his personality is reflected here”. This comment is the best estimation of the book entitled “Blind Jump” by Amos Ettinger, a famous Israeli lyricist, radio journalist and TV reporter whose literary work describes an outstanding and fabulous historical figure of Shaike Dan.
