Kharkov
Jewish Community Center “Beith Dan” is probably one
of the youngest Jewish organizations in the city. It has been seven
years since the doors of JCC Beith Dan first welcomed individuals
willing to experience the world of Jewish culture.
JCC
Beith Dan was initially created to become the hearth of national life
for Kharkov Jews where children, youth, and representatives of older
generations would not only learn about the history and traditions of
Jewish people, but also would become active participants of holidays
and everyday activity of city Jewish community as well as would acquire
the opportunity of versatile intellectual and creative development.
Maintenance and development of a viable Jewish community are
necessary conditions for complete life of Jews in Diaspora. Our mission is to become an
explorer to the Jewish world while serving as a connecting link for
consolidation of Jewish community members and Jewish organizations of
Kharkov and throughout the region.
This
task is not easy. However Mr. Shaike
Dan, after whom our JCC was named, had faced even more
difficult challenges. There is a deep symbolical connection between the
main goal of our JCC and the feat of this brave paratrooper who saved
thousands of Jews from the countries under Nazi occupation and
transferred them to their renascent motherland. Our goal is to return
the light and warmth of Jewish word and the enchantment of Jewish music
from non-existence and decades of neglect, to collect the crumbs of
once rich spiritual heritage of Kharkov Jewish community, to restore
and multiply all the best values that our ancestors used to cherish.
Since
2002 JCC Beith Dan has been operating in a modern and comfortable
facility (pictures of JCC Beith Dan),
located in the center of Kharkov near a picturesque recreation area
entitled Gorky Park.
Today
the diversity of opportunities and services offered by JCC Beith Dan is
represented by its six basic departments: “Mazel
Tov” (“Kind Planet”) for young children
ages 0-6, “Beith Atid” (“House of the
Future”) for children and teenagers ages 7-15,
“Jewish Youth Association” for youth, high school
and college students ages 16-25, “Family Center”
for Jewish families, “Tradition, Culture and Art”
that serves as a source of knowledge on Jewish culture, history, and
tradition, ”Leadership and Volunteering” which
fosters the renewal of traditional social assistance and support.
Besides that, on a monthly basis JCC Beith Dan publishes its newsletter
entitled “Beith Dan INFORM”, broadcasts the
“Menorah” TV program on city television, supervises
and updates its website entitled “DAVAR”. Click

For

the newcomers and the professionals to master up-to-date computer
technologies and raise the level of computer competence.
